Home & Contents Insurance Coverage Options

FD Beck offers three levels of Home and Contents Insurance to suit different needs and budgets:

1. Accidental Damage Cover

Our most comprehensive option, this insurance policy covers accidental loss or damage to your home and contents. Some coverage may also extend to personal belongings outside the home, subject to policy sub-limits. This may include limited portable items cover and portable contents cover for added flexibility.

2. Listed Events Cover

A mid-tier option that covers insured events such as fire insurance, storm, and burglary. Coverage may extend to events like storm damage, with some policies offering optional excess-free glass cover. This cover does not extend to losses occurring away from the home.

3. Listed Events Base Cover

An entry-level home insurance policy with more restrictions, similar to the coverage typically offered by direct insurers.

Limitations and Exclusions in Home and Contents Cover

While each home and contents insurance policy may vary, typical exclusions include:

i

Damage if your home is unoccupied for more than 90 consecutive days

ii

Damage caused by animals or insects

iii

Damage due to corrosion or rust

iv

Wear and tear from general use

Exclusions may also apply to specific contents insurance claims, including exclusions related to unlisted valuable items or incorrect sum insured estimates. Some policies may limit legal liability coverage in cases involving intentional damage or unlawful activity.

For a detailed list of exclusions, please speak with an FD Beck Insurance Broker. We’ll help you understand the fine print, including the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), the target market determination, and ensure your cover matches your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Premiums vary by suburb, building materials, security features, and proximity to risks such as bushfire zones or flood-prone creeks. Inner-city properties often attract lower premiums than outer-metro homes near bush or coastline, especially when using the home sum insured as a pricing guide.

Yes. Policies can include bushfire cover for homes located in designated Victorian bushfire-prone areas, provided you meet any risk-reduction requirements (e.g., cleared gutters, compliant building standards).

Not always. Flood Cover—defined as water escaping or overflowing from a natural watercourse—may be optional under some home insurance policies. Ask your FD Beck broker to confirm inclusion or arrange a tailored extension.

Standard policies insure against storm, hail, heavy rain, and lightning. Coverage may include storm damage, as well as risks associated with storm surge, as noted in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). Damage from the sudden “Melbourne change” and severe spring storms is generally included, subject to policy limits.

Yes, items such as fine jewellery, artwork, or high-end electronics should be listed with their replacement value to ensure full protection under a Melbourne Home and Contents policy.

Most comprehensive covers pay reasonable temporary accommodation or alternative accommodation costs while repairs are underway, up to a stated limit. FD Beck can advise on suitable limits for greater-Melbourne rental rates.

Use FD Beck’s online Building and Contents Cover calculators and cross-check with a local builder or quantity surveyor to reflect current Victorian construction costs and building codes. Adjust the building sum insured as needed to reflect accurate rebuilding costs.

You can reduce premiums by adding deadlocks, window locks, a monitored alarm, and smoke detectors; upgrading wiring and roofing to current codes; increasing your policy excess; and bundling multiple policies—such as Home and Contents Insurance and motor cover—with FD Beck. These steps demonstrate lower risk to insurers and may attract rate discounts or loyalty savings.

It’s also helpful to understand whether your policy includes legal liability cover, which protects you financially if someone is injured on your property. Selecting an appropriate liability limit can balance risk and affordability.

Yes. If you rent out your property, FD Beck can combine Landlord Insurance—covering tenant-related damage and loss of rent—with standard building and contents insurance or combined home and contents insurance options for full protection.

Prepare proof of ownership (receipts, photos), a detailed list of damaged items, and, for theft claims, a Victoria Police report number. Review your certificate of insurance (COI) and product disclosure statement to ensure you have the required documentation. Your FD Beck broker will manage the claims process and follow-up.
